Volunteering

“Volunteering is time willingly given for the common good and without financial gain.”

Volunteering can be personally rewarding and helps you to “give something back” to your community. We are always on the lookout for new volunteers to join our team. Some of the volunteering opportunities at Quercus include:

  • Bookshop: selling, sorting, pricing and cleaning second-hand books
  • Op Shop: selling, sorting and pricing donated items
  • Community Garden
  • Emergency Assistance
  • Events and Community Engagement
  • Administration
  • Prison Program Assistance

Volunteering at Quercus is most rewarding for me; Fellow volunteers and staff are genuine and caring people. It is rewarding to be able to put something back into the community. Quercus bookshop has a wonderful ambiance. Volunteering is very good for the soul.

“I had always loved the idea of working in a bookshop and was delighted when Quercus opened all those years ago! I have worked on Friday afternoons ever since. As an avid reader, I love being surrounded by books and having conversations with customers about what they enjoy reading and how we can help them. For me, it is a wonderful way of giving to the community while receiving so much myself from fellow volunteers, customers – and the books themselves!

I certainly find the most rewarding part of volunteering apart from providing a service,is interacting with people that sometimes may find themselves somewhat lonely and I am sure appreciate the contact.

I am a lover of books and it is a great pleasure to spend time with like minded volunteers and customers. I am also proud to be part of a huge team who offers its time to help those in need in our community. For me, living some kilometres from Beechworth, it is a great way to catch up on town news and events. The staff at Quercus are kind, helpful and also care for and respect their volunteers.

What I enjoy about volunteering at the Quercus bookshop as an older citizen is meeting and talking with people who enjoy books as much as I do, and the friendships made with other volunteers. It is a way of feeling connected to the community.

Garden

What appeals to me is being involved in something the community appreciates and enjoys. Building up a run-down garden area for people of all ages, visitors and locals to use and feel relaxed in. I enjoy the interaction with visitors, volunteers and being able to use my varied skills. I love seeing new projects getting results i.e. the start of Grow Free and the successful growing results! I appreciate being asked for ideas and treated with respect and being appreciated. I like to volunteer for an ethical, well-run, innovative, modern organisation like Quercus.
